Barriers: A Documentation
Drawing Marathon

The Assignment
Juniors in section three who are enrolled in the graphic design program at the University of the Arts (Spring 2009) were assigned the task of documenting a workshop in the University's first annual Drawing Marathon. The student chooses any workshop(s) of interest and develops a specific approach on how to document the workshop best. After the documentation, the student has to translate it into a well-designed and well-planned website.

The Workshop

A 6-foot tall, 60-foot long collaborative drawing/rubbing in graphite. Using textured matrixes under paper, participants will produce a rubbing of the surfaces beneath. Before putting pencil to paper participants will be invited to make textured matrixes using materials provided (or their own). The matrix might be corrugated cardboard, a board with several pieces of tape, or a textured surface of raised and recessed marks, images or type. The matrix will be laid under the paper. Drawing over the matrixes will produce a rubbing. The drawing produced will resemble a fence or barricade. Thus the title, "Barriers."

My Perspective

I'm focusing on the students' hands as they use their textured objects to produce a rubbed image on paper with graphite. With my camera, I will take continous photos (one per second) to get as much as the process as possible. I should end up with over 150 images that I will use to create a short video of the textures appearing on paper. My angle will be to stand behind the student and photograph only the hands, paper, and charcoal.
